I started Oberlin College in 1968, became a Chinese major, played JV basketball, went to India for junior year and Taiwan for senior year, visited Japan in between, graduated without returning to Oberlin. Married Fumiyo in Kyoto in 1975. Joined the Los Angeles Times as an intern in 1978-1979, as an employee in late 1979, and was an LAT foreign correspondent for 20 years consecutively 1987-2007, based in Beijing, Tokyo, Warsaw and Moscow. Took early retirement in 2007 and returned to Tokyo. Taught as an adjunct at Waseda and Keio for 13 years, retiring in 2021. Now divide my time between Tokyo, a village in Nagano Prefecture (mostly here) where we have many elderly friends and do extensive gardening, and winters mostly in Kyoto.
