Hilly was my very dear friend and we always kept in contact until she passed away in California shortly after her marriage. I think of her often -she was probably the most "bubbly", upbeat person I've known.

I remember very fondly being very new to Pittsford in the 8th grade and at an end of year dance in the cafeteria, having Hillary walk up to me and ask me to dance. I didn't know her, but was totally amazed at how beautiful she was.

We danced one song, (sort of) and then the lights went up at the end of the dance and we each left separately. I left alone.

Of course I saw her often in high school but we were in different circles. I think she was an honor student and I was a C student so our world were not the same.

I've often thought about that moment and always wondered how she had the guts to ask someone like me, a new kid, to dance.

I was seriously flattered and think of her and that time when I'm in a new situation or with a new group of people.

It's been helpful all these years. I wish I had known her better....

We visited Hilly in Paso Robles, California, in January of 1999. Her brain tumor had advanced to the point that there was nothing left to do. Her husband, Elton,  is a loving outdoorsy guy, and I know they shared lots of fun times. He stayed until her death in March/April I think of that year.

I am not sure Hilly knew me but we reminisced about sneaking out on her parents at night- her mom was so dense- shared some laughs and said our teary goodbyes. We didn't stay close as Hilly was Miss Independence.  I did write a note to Mr. Borrosh at her death so he could know. I really didn't know how to get in touch with everyone.

I think Hilly's brother Geoff still lives in San Luis Obispo. They got closer after their parents both died. She was my best friend from high school and its funny but I really should have named my daughter after her- she reminds me so much of her every day.
